Kitchen and Pantry Overhaul

Mak­ing the deci­sion to eat healthy may seem like a sim­ple deci­sion, but it can be eas­ier said than done. In many cases, you can be your own food neme­sis. The keys to your un-doing may be hid­ing in your own pantry or refrigerator.

It’s much harder to resist eat­ing junk when you have it read­ily avail­able in your home, so giv­ing your fridge and pantry an over­haul is essen­tial. Out with the bad food and in with the good food must be your mantra. Won­der­ing what to toss and what to replace it with? Here are a few ideas:

Trash It!!

  • Fatty meat prod­ucts, like pulled pork, bacon, fat-marbled beef, and any fried meats.
  • But­ter, mar­garine, whole-fat milk, full-fat cheese and yogurt.
  • Any veg­gies that are fried, bat­tered, or cov­ered in cheese or other unhealthy sauces.
  • White rice, prod­ucts made with processed flour (i.e. white bread), sugar-coated cereals.
  • Chips, crack­ers, cook­ies, pas­tries, cakes, microwave popcorn.
  • Soda, juice drinks that aren’t 100% juice, diet drinks.
  • Commercially-made din­ners, piz­zas, and snacks.
  • Gravies, sauces, spreads, or dress­ings with may­on­naise, sour cream, cream, or cheese as a base, condi­ments with high sugar content.

Cache It!!

  • Skin­less chicken breast, lean ground turkey, turkey hot dogs, fish, shellfish.
  • Olive or canola oil, fat-free milk, low-fat soy milk, reduced fat yogurt and cheese.
  • Any fresh or frozen fruits and veggies.
  • Brown rice, whole grain bread and pasta, oat-based cold cere­als, shred­ded wheat, bran flakes.
  • Dark choco­late, mini semi-sweet choco­late chips, wal­nuts, almonds, dried fruits, organic pop­corn kernels.
  • Orange, grape­fruit, or cran­berry juice, naturally-flavored water, sparkling water.
  • Frozen meals with no more than 4g sugar and fat and no more than 400 mg of sodium.
  • Salt, pep­per, fresh gar­lic, low-sodium soy sauce, bal­samic vine­gar, vir­gin olive oil, apple but­ter, organic ketchup, mus­tard, BBQ sauce, and salad dressing.
