Remember back in the day when you were a kid and your mother shooed you from in front of the TV, claiming wild implausibilities like too much tube would blind you? Well, it turns out Mom may not have been so nutty after all. Study after study has concluded that prolonged TV-watching sessions can lead to serious health problems later in life. Those maladies can include:
- Increased risk of heart disease
- Increased risk of Type 2 diabetes
- Increased risk of obesity (TV watching can lead to increase consumption of unhealthy, energy-dense foods.)
- Disruption of normal sleep cycle (Light emitted by TV may stimulate our systems, leading to a decrease in hormones governing sleep.)
- Increased risk of asthma
- Development of childhood Attention Deficit Disorder (Could be spurred by rapid changes in sound and image on TV)
- Eye strain
- Reduction in sperm production in men
- Greater chance of mindless eating leading to weight gain
Some experts believe that the simple act of sitting still, a common condition when watching TV, has a hugely negative affect on your health. Long periods of inactivity mean decreased muscle movement, which can lead to a decrease in metabolism. Watching too much TV can also affect some non-physical aspects of your life, including:
- Your personal relationships (The more you believe in romantic relationships of TV couple, the less satisfied with your own relationship.)
- Negative impact on the intellectual development of kids and degradation of mental processing power in older people.
- An increase in exhibition of aggressive behavior in children exposed to too much TV.
- Reduction in social interaction which may lead to social phobias
The bottom line is that Mom wasn’t quite right. TV does rot your brain, but it can ruin a lot more than that.
