Vitamin Supplements – Yay or Nay?

Over the past few decades, the vitamin supplement industry has grown into a multi-billion dollar marketplace. Claims abound that vitamin supplements can help you fight cancer, put the kibosh on heart disease, and even stop aging. Other studies have shown that there is little evidence that vitamin supplements do anything at all for already-healthy people. So who’s right?

While vitamin supplements may not benefit everybody, they have been show to be very beneficial for those suffering from malnutrition or other vitamin deficiencies. However, the current popularity of vitamin supplements in the U.S. may have much to do with the American lifestyle. We’re always on the go, with little time for properly prepared, well-balanced meals. We consume way too much fast food, most of which has little to no nutritional value. As a result, we don’t get the vitamins and nutrients we need form our diets.

While there may be a debate over the relative benefits of taking vitamin supplements, there can be no doubt about the best way to get your nutrients. Getting your vitamins and minerals from the food you eat is more effective than taking multivitamins. In fact, eating a well-balanced diet eliminates the need for taking supplements. Period.

Therein is where the answer may lie: instead of taking vitamin supplement that may or may not provide health benefits, we should change our eating habits. We should eat more fruits and vegetables, and skip the fast foods and red meat. Because, whether or not vitamin supplements actually help, eating properly ensures you get all the nutrients you need. It’s a slam dunk!
