Vitamin Supplements – Yay or Nay?

Over the past few decades, the vit­a­min sup­ple­ment indus­try has grown into a multi-billion dol­lar mar­ket­place. Claims abound that vit­a­min sup­ple­ments can help you fight can­cer, put the kibosh on heart dis­ease, and even stop aging. Other stud­ies have shown that there is lit­tle evi­dence that vit­a­min sup­ple­ments do any­thing at all for already-healthy peo­ple. So who’s right?

While vit­a­min sup­ple­ments may not ben­e­fit every­body, they have been show to be very ben­e­fi­cial for those suf­fer­ing from mal­nu­tri­tion or other vit­a­min defi­cien­cies. How­ever, the cur­rent pop­u­lar­ity of vit­a­min sup­ple­ments in the U.S. may have much to do with the Amer­i­can lifestyle. We’re always on the go, with lit­tle time for prop­erly pre­pared, well-balanced meals. We con­sume way too much fast food, most of which has lit­tle to no nutri­tional value. As a result, we don’t get the vit­a­mins and nutri­ents we need form our diets.

While there may be a debate over the rel­a­tive ben­e­fits of tak­ing vit­a­min sup­ple­ments, there can be no doubt about the best way to get your nutri­ents. Get­ting your vit­a­mins and min­er­als from the food you eat is more effec­tive than tak­ing mul­ti­vi­t­a­mins. In fact, eat­ing a well-balanced diet elim­i­nates the need for tak­ing sup­ple­ments. Period.

Therein is where the answer may lie: instead of tak­ing vit­a­min sup­ple­ment that may or may not pro­vide health ben­e­fits, we should change our eat­ing habits. We should eat more fruits and veg­eta­bles, and skip the fast foods and red meat. Because, whether or not vit­a­min sup­ple­ments actu­ally help, eat­ing prop­erly ensures you get all the nutri­ents you need. It’s a slam dunk!
